THE CREATIVE HABITS LAB: A structured hour to build a consistent creative routine
Who: Artists and non-artists alike who want to jump-start (or re-start) a consistent habit that includes a creative practice, a creative project, or creative tools such as journaling, meditating, doodling, visualizing, etc.
What: A structured virtual accountability group that helps build a consistent creative routine
When: Fridays: 10:00 am - 11:00 am (eastern time)
The Creative Habits Lab meets (virtually) every Friday. We start the meeting with a brief check-in to share what activity we’ve each chosen for the session. We then mute our mics, leave our cameras on (mostly), and work on our activity simultaneously – working solo, but together to create just enough accountability and engagement to follow through on our intentions. Finally, we close the meeting with a debrief and celebration.
I hold the structure so you can more easily build your new routine. I will make sure we start and end on time and that everyone gets a chance to check-in and debrief. I am there to consistently hold the space and to celebrate our daily progress and commitment.
And finally, I ask that everyone limit their activities to a creative discipline, a creative project, or any activity that nurtures their creativity.
ALL Creative Habits Lab sessions are VIRTUAL
F.A.Q.s
Why did you create the Creative Habits Lab and who is it for?
I created "the lab" after a short stint using an online virtual co-working platform. I tend to be an over-thinker. I struggle with rabbit holes as well as perfectionism and procrastination. I was finding that studio time was always ending up last on my todo list, many times for days. Virtual co-working helped a lot! So, I created my own version of it to help myself and others be consistent in the studio, their own personal projects, and/or their creative routines.
What is virtual co-working?
Virtual co-working is a structured, virtual meeting where participants work simultaneously to increase productivity and create a sense of camaraderie. The lab's structure encourages a gentle accountability through setting intentions at the beginning of the hour and debriefing as to what's working as we close the hour. Some additional benefits include better focus, increased mindfulness, and a sense of fulfillment from spending time on what's most important.
Do I have to be an artist to join?
No! Anyone can join, no matter your connection to art. I welcome anyone who wants to create time for creative habits, projects, or practices.
What kind of things do people work on?
Art-making, practicing an instrument, writing, doodling, coloring, journaling, meditating, and/or anything that is part of a personal or creative project. To keep everyone in the spirit of making time for their projects, I ask that participants not work on "grunt" type work (such answering emails or balancing your checkbook, etc.) or physical exercise. That said, if you are stuck and using the lab to do your taxes helps you in some way, I'm probably going to be all for it! If you are interested but unsure if your specific idea fits, feel free to reach out to me!
When are the sessions?
Fridays, 10:00 - 11:00 am (eastern time)
Do I have to join every week?
No! That said, I recommend setting an intention as to how often you want to attend and why. This will help you determine if you are spending the optimal of time on your creative / personal work. And, I ask that you make every effort to come at the beginning for the check-in. But, if that's not possible on any given day, no worries! Better to join late than not at all. If this happens, just pop into the meeting, put your intentions in the chat (if you wish), and go about your session. We'll still celebrate with you at the end!
Will I need to have my camera on and speak up in the group?
I like to hold a consistent structure. I find it's helpful to give everyone a chance to share during both the check-ins and debrief/celebration. We generally have cameras on for these. In additional, most people leave their cameras on for the work session. All that said, nothing is required! This is just what I find most helpful. I am an introvert, so I understand if you might be a little resistant at first. I promise the structure is super gentle and I strive to create a "no pressure" zone.
How much does it cost?
Friday labs are totally free!
